Business is Building

Well, things have somewhat settled down here at the Homestead.

Running and building any business, particularly a restaurant, takes tremendous effort! We spend everyday at it. But the effort seems to be taking us in the right direction. Our menu and daily specials that Cindy comes up with are really being successful. People are regularly coming in for a number of things we are cooking often saying it is the BEST food in the area! That is gratifying.

Surprisingly, our green chili is one of the most popular items on the menu! Some are coming in and asking for a quart to take home. The barbeque sauce and chicken wings also are very good. Customers oftne ask what the recipe's are...and I have finally found how to properly answer their questions.

When asked what we use or how we make something, I look them straight in the eye and ask them if they can keep a secret. They all say yes! And I reply, "So can I!" It gets a big laugh and they get the message.

We have a really decent group of employees at this time. They are working hard. I think the small town areas, while limited in the number of choices you have in finding good help, offer more people with a good work ethic. Unfortunately, there are a couple that are probably not going to work out and we will have to end up replacing them. Most of the problem centers around just having a bad attitude.

What is most encouraging is that our daily numbers have not dropped that much at a time of year everyone said would be the slowest time of year. AS a matter of fact, we are actually seeing business continue to grow slightly. So I am optimistic that as word continues to spread about the food and service, spring and summer business could really be good!

Karaoke continues to be one of the best nights of the week. I just added draft beer today. And I am planning on being the place to watch NASCAR in the area.

As if I need any distractions, I accomplished the Fastrak goal in Ameriplan of reaching RSD, regional sales director, within the first 3 weeks. I made aobut $700 in that time. Not too shabby! And it only took a few days of effort to do that. There is really good money to be made with this dental benefit plan. It is perfect for small business owners as well as individuals who don't have or can't afford health coverage. With Ameriplan, you can get up to 80% discounts on dental, vision, prescription, and chiropractic services. I think it is worth the distraction of taking an hour or so a day and see if I can market this plan/service to other small businesses. Becoming a broker only cost me $35 which provides me with all the customer support, accounting, etc from Ameriplan for myself and any customers I set up on the plan.

I have one of the salesmen I have bought print advertising from if he would be interested in asking the businesses he calls on if they would be interested in dental benefits. And he had a bit of a problem with the fact it would cost him $35 bucks to gain right to market for the company! I was DUMBFOUNDED. If he only knew what it costs me to run my business DAILY, it makes his comment about the 35 bucks such a joke! It costs me about that much a week just in gas to get to the restaruant so that I can open the doors for business!!!!
