A Time for Thanks
On a Perfect Pre-Thanksgiving Day
Isn't it weird how events often are associated with the weather? I was talking with a customer this AM and we thought this day was just a perfect day preceding Thanksgiving. And it is. Cool temperatures, some clouds, and the threat of a little snow. It seems the conditions enhance my holiday experiences! On the contary, I'll bet you have had some past ones where you have said yourself, "It just doesn't seem like ......." and the reason was because it was 60 degrees like on Christmas day. Well, today does seem like Thanksgiving.
Of course, there are some differences...like this year I will be working! We felt it would be a good thing to offer Thanksgiving dinner at the restaurant for those that have no other plans or places to go. We have over 50 reservations and have cut it off there.
The demands and time the business is requiring is very challenging. It is becoming harder to keep up with this pace. This could be a factor in deciding not to continue the venture, when that decison comes.
The Entrepreneurial Spirit
I read that less than 3% of the population in this country are interested in being anything more than wage earners. I know that many of my friends have clearly stated that as fact.
One of my former managers said that what I was doing was so great. Pursing the American dream! What he didn't see was the huge committment of time, energy, and money it is taking to do this. I can appreciate the safety and comfort found working for a corporation. As this venture (I now refer to it as an adventure!) develops, we are constantly re-evaluating what to do next or how to do things differently and hope everything turns out successfully.
Despite the challenges, I am one of those 3% that does seek to be in business for myself.
Much more on this later, especially some observations on those using the internet to market their wares. The 4 month break from having internet access gave me some new perspectives on this.
A Thanksgiving Prayer
by Samuel F. Pugh
Oh God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry;
When I have work, help me remember the jobless;
When I have a home, help me remember those who have no home at all;
When I am in pain, help me remember those who suffer;
And remembering, help me destroy my complacency; bestir my compassion, and be concerned enough to help;
By word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted!
....Happy Thanksgiving....
